We May Be Pregnant

Apparently my breeder is all about the low tech. When I asked about the puppy mama and if her pregnancy took, she said that she was "getting tubby", so she thought yes. When I asked about an ultrasound or some kind of equivalent, she said her vet didn't have one, and we would just had to "wait for her tummy to grow". I don't know if that's normal or if my breeder is just behind on the times, but I think it kinda stinks.

Oh, that does stink. That doesn't allow her very much in the way of planning upcoming homes for these little guys or finding out if there should be any issues. Poo. But I guess if you live in a remote area, you deal with what you're given. I know on the farm we basically just hoped and leaned on traditional remedies/diagnostics unless something was obviously terribly wrong. I don't think it is terribly behind the times unless she is in a populous area and could obviously get to a vet with an ultrasound. I think most breeders do ultrasounds but I don't know all THAT many breeders so I'm certainly no authority.

It does stink! If it makes you feel any better, my breeder let me know that the dog is pregnant, but no further information (# of puppies, etc). But if the dogs were bred mid October-ish, from the calendar it looks like the abdomen starts growing around week 4, and it won't be obvious until week 6 or 7, so you still have a couple weeks to go by the old fashioned method. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

My fingers are crossed as well!

Well she lives about 20 miles outside of Tulsa, so I don't think it's that remote... But that does make me feel better Jenna. :)

Lynn, you're calendar is hilarious! I actually emailed your breeder asking some questions about that litter. She basically said that she would "add me to the list", which I guess means I'll get a puppy when I get one because she said "you can't just order a puppy and get one when you want it". But she also said that she didn't think my lifestyle was very conducive to a dog because I work all day. So I'm guessing that means she won't give me one anyway. But I'll talk to her a bit more and find out more about it. She impresses me as a breeder much more than my breeder, unfortunately. I found her very forthcoming with information and honest. Finally! But for now I'm just talking to her. I'm still assuming that I'm getting my puppy from my original breeder as planned.

I have been thinking a lot about working while having a dog. I am glad to hear that the breeder said those things, and am a little embarrassed to admit that I have a lot more talking to do with her. Maybe I will send her an email tonight. I will be working as well, so the best I can offer the pup is coming home at lunch. With my boyfriend, the longest the dog will be left at home alone is 4 hours, which I don't think is too bad, but who knows. Lisa is an excellent breeder, although I am a little sad that because she is such a responsible breeder that I may not get a puppy. Like you, I am "on the list" and am preparing myself for a grueling interview process.

Lynn, leaving a dog alone for 4 hours a day is fine. I would be really surprised if someone tried to tell you it wasn't. Even dogs need alone time. If you're not opposed to crating, leaving a dog in its crate for a few hours while you're away is supposed to be a great way for the dog to have its quiet time without tearing up your house. :)

The list is definitely a weird thing. She wouldn't tell me how many people were on it. I'm guessing if I don't hear something definitive from her, I'll ask to be taken off of it. She does sound very responsible, but on the other hand I don't really want to be jerked around.

Oh my goodness, I am SO glad to hear that you think the list is a weird thing too! She won't tell me how many people are on it either. WHEW you totally just lifted so much weight off my shoulders. I thought I was the only one! I figure she just doesn't want to tell me because she hasn't met me yet, and wants to make sure her puppies go to the best homes for them. Which from her side is responsible, from our side wanting corgis is so nerve-wracking!

hmm... thats kinda weird, the responses is almost like she didn't want to spend the money on confirming a pregnancy? Have you contacted her past clients and see their experience with other litters?

Julo- I just realized that I wrote 4 hours a day. I meant 4 hours at a time, so probably total 7.5 hours a day. makes a little bit of a difference. :)

I don't think being on a list is such a weird thing. It's not as if the breeder just goes down the list and offers up puppies. Let's say you're number 4 on the list, that doesn't mean she calls you up fourth and says there's 6 puppies, you get 4th pick. It's more like you're in her directory in her mind and she will keep you in mind when puppies come available if there is one she thinks fits your wants and needs and would fit well into your household. If you're "number 4" (not there is an order but we'll say you contacted her after 3 other people that she thinks are good candidates for puppy homes) but there are some puppies she thinks would be good show prospects, one she thinks needs a VERY dominant human and one she thinks would make an excellent obedience/tracking dog and wants it to go to a performance home and perhaps none of those fit your wants and needs or the puppy's needs, then you wouldn't get one this round. As far as I know from other good breeders, the list means she'll keep you in mind, taking into account what's best for you and for each of the puppies. So the number of people on the list is fairly irrelevant.

As for working with a dog, do NOT let anyone guilt trip you about leaving your dog alone or crating it, unless it is for ungodly amounts of time like 8-10 hour stretches in a crate. Sully is in a crate for about 3-4 hours each day before Mike gets home and then also if we go out at night. He LOVES his crate, runs to it when we say the magic word, jumps in and if it's nap time and for some reason we're home so he doesn't have to in, he gets all squirrelly and whines and wants to take his nap.

Lynn, I'm planning on doing the same thing, at least for the first 6 months. I'm going to take off in the middle of the day, so probably 3-4 hours stretches at a time. I just told the breeder about this, so I'll let you know what she says. Jenna, just like you say, I'm planning to crate at least one of those stretches of time, as I also mentioned to the breeder.

I don't think it's weird to have a list per se. I think it's weird to say "I'll add you to my list of potential candidates" and I'm supposed to what? Just sit around for 6 months...a year...two years, hoping that this one breeder will deem me worthy of a dog? I get that some may be for showing, or some may need a more dominant hand. But from my understanding while puppies have different personalities, I find it hard to believe that out of a whole litter of puppies someone couldn't find one that would suit me. The only reason I could see that happening is if it's my lifestyle the breeder doesn't like, in which case she should just tell me to look elsewhere.

Sam, I haven't contacted any of the people she placed puppies with in the past. I'm almost to shy to even contact breeders! Hehe. But that's a good point.

well guys I was googling to find out if my corgi, pemberley, was pregnant and ran into this page. Iam going to the vet this week for an exam and possibly view the puppies and see how many. If we are we should be due between the 6th and 13th of Dec. I am based out of Oklahoma city and can be reached @ aldierifam4@yahoo.com. good luck otherwise these are the best dogs ever, absolutely adore mine.
