Video Of The Week 8

This week's video star is Sully the corgi. Why this video? While the spin at the end is very cute, if you observe his tail nub in the first 15 seconds of the video, I think you'll see why I've posted it.

Look at how he wags that nub! It's adorable! Nubs are officially cuter than full tails!

Awww, thanks for posting Sully! Nubbins are indeed most adorable! But you will run into those that think nubs are inhumane. I have mixed feelings, but bunny butts win me over in the end as long as they were preformed by a vet. I have run into one downfall of the nubbin though-harder to observe doggy signals without a tail, but if you're observant enough you can still tell what's going on in that corgi brain.

Thanks for posting the cute videos! In terms of the question of inhumanity for tail docking, I don't think it is when it's done when they're so young. I mean, just look at we do to our baby boys! What's a tail compared to that?

I really like your blog and I'm going through and reading previous posts, since I only just found it. Since I'm reading in chronological order, you may have mentioned this later and I simply haven't read it yet. How do you reconcile the fact that you want to provide the best nutrition possible for your dog and are willing to cook food for it, against the recommendation of veterinarians, with removing that same dog's tail because it's cuter? I agree that nubs are adorable but, much like declawing cats, I cannot get over the fact that it is cutting off a dog's body for purely aesthetic purposes. Your thoughts? Have they changed since getting your puppy?

Lee Lee, I'm not sure what you mean by comparing nutrition to tail docking, but I assume you mean that I'm obviously willing to go the extra mile for my dog to be happy and healthy. And vets don't know squat about nutrition! Check the ingredients of the food they tell you to buy and see for yourself. Sorry, end tangent. :)

First, I don't think docking tails is anything like de-clawing cats. That's a bit apples and oranges to me. I'd say removing a dog's canine's is more on par with that. Second, I never said I agree with tail docking for the sole purpose that it's cuter. I don't actually agree with it. But it's also the breed standard. As in, if you're buying from a breeder, they're going to dock their tails within the first 3 days of birth, which means by the time you get to choose your puppy, the deed is done.

Of course, since I've gotten Theo and been a but more immersed in the Corgi community I've learned that tail docking is something that a few breeders (a very few in the US anyway) are starting to shy away from. So whenever I get a second Corgi, I will definitely be taking that into consideration when choosing a breeder! But in the meantime, I don't think there's anything wrong with admiring a little nub cuteness. If you really have an issue with tail docking, I'd say the best thing to do would be to take the issue to the AKC. Breeders do it because it's the breed standard. If it were no longer standard (like in the UK), they would no longer do it! It's all about the shows.

Thanks for the great question!
